The Tower's Promise
The moment you step into The Tower, you are already forgotten. That’s the promise carved into its base: “ENTER AND BE FORGOTTEN.” Those who cross the threshold face ten floors of impossible trials, each testing not strength or intellect, but the willingness to lose everything.
Welcome to the lore of the Tower of Names, the central mystery of The Identity Index and the broader The Stolen Stream universe. The Tower does not reward the curious or analytical—it accepts only the desperate. At its heart lies a secret one man will shatter with a single lie.
Arrival of the Obelisks
The story begins with The Tower’s Arrival, a global event defying physics and reason. Black obelisks of impossible stone appeared in plazas across every continent. They absorb all light, register as massless on instruments, and cannot be moved, scratched, or touched without consequence.
Each Tower stands in what was once a public Plaza, now surrounded by a Military Perimeter—government checkpoints and scientific observers meant to keep out the unworthy. But the military grew complacent. They couldn’t stop the truly desperate.
At the base of each Tower, the Inscription glows: ENTER AND BE FORGOTTEN. Those who press their hand against the stone experience Threshold Rejection—the Tower repels them violently or shows them something so terrifying they flee. Only a fraction are ever allowed inside—those who have already given up on the world.
The Anteroom and the Wall of Names
The first chamber inside the Tower is the Anteroom—a vast, impossible space with a ceiling lost in golden haze and walls curving with non-Euclidean geometry. Covering one infinite surface is the Wall of Names: every person who has ever lived or entered the Tower, their names carved and glowing in no discernible order.
The Protagonist, known only as The Liar, enters after his Threshold Crossing at midnight. He is unnamed, burdened by an identity he wants to escape. But he holds a secret the Tower has never encountered: a false name.
As he steps inside, he meets the other entrants: The Old Man, sobbing at the Wall; The Woman in Military Fatigues, scanning with disciplined focus; The Meditating Young Man, breathing deep and even. Standing in the center, recording names in a leather-bound book of shifting colors, is the First Accountant—a seven-foot-tall figure of black stone with a blank obsidian face and fingers far too long.
The Accountant keeps the ledger. Every entrant must make their Claim—pressing a hand against the Wall to etch their name permanently into the stone. That act registers them for the trial ahead. But when The Liar presses his hand, he does not give his real name. He gives a fiction.
And that’s where the story truly begins—with a lie that unravels the Tower’s design. For more on the deeper mechanics and consequences of this act, explore .
